The “UN” know-it-all

The “UN” know-it-all

It’s humbling to be humbled.

This week I was made well aware of my love for being the “One Who Knows Things”.

Lately, I’m getting a peek at the ways and places that I’m blinded to how my behavior and attitudes affect others.  –

After all, as the eldest kid in my family, and the only girl- and the only one in health care – I have worked hard for many years to “know things.”

Which is fine, I’m not knocking that.  But I’m beginning to see how it keeps me from genuinely connecting with others.

I’m starting to pay attention to the missed opportunities to “not know”.  Even with my acupuncture patients and coaching clients- it’s easy to believe that my role is to be the one to arrive at the “solution.”

And sometimes folks will out and out tell me to “please fix me”.  Of course I smile and lead them back to how we will address their issue together, and yada yada yada.

But if I’m honest, I admit I do feel the pressure within myself to come up with an answer.

How wonderful it would be though, to use those moments to enter into the space of “not knowing” with them.

What if my practice became to just invite a bit more time there, to see what arises for them, from their own innate wisdom.

To make room for the insight that is relevant, resonant, and revealing in a way that I could never come up with for them?

How magnificent and humbling!  Turns out, someone has done some research on Mindfulness and Humility, so maybe I’m on to something :-)
